Dozens arrested as protesters shut down bridge

EXTINCTION Rebellion claims 35 protesters have been arrested after they shut down a major Brisbane bridge.

Hundreds of protesters took to William Jolly Bridge just after 10am chanting "this is what democracy looks like", closing it to traffic.

The bridge reopened about 12.10pm.

An extinction rebellion spokeswoman Emily Jane said the group occupied the bridge because they want climate action.

She calls for the government to stop Adani and start investing in renewable energy.

"Everyone needs to be out here everyone should be for climate action. It's as simple as that. This is not extremism. It's extremist to be at work right now," Ms Jane said.

Today's activity follows a week of protests dubbed Rebellion Week which saw one man suspended from the Story Bridge, another blocking trains and multiple protesters locking themselves to a boat in Brisbane's CBD.

It comes after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk vowed to fast-track laws to increase the penalties for protesters using locking devices.

Under the new laws, protesters will be jailed for up to two years if they're caught using dangerous devices from locks to drums with concrete.
