VIDEO: Car 'snaps in two' in crash at Winternationals

DRAG racing fans collectively held their breath when racing legend Phil Lamattina crashed his Top Fuel dragster in spectacular fashion at the weekend.

The 39-year-old Victorian drag racer is recovering in hospital after shattering his vertebrae when his car "snapped in two" and became airborne at the Fuchs Winternationals in Willowbank at about 3pm on Saturday.

Lamattina was conscious and alert following the accident and was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver's family issued a statement on the Lamattina Top Fuel Racing's Facebook page which told fans he was expected to make a full recovery.

"The team will keep everyone up to date with his progress over the coming days," the post read. "The family thanks all for the well wishes and support."

The Fuchs Winternationals once again saw large crowds in attendance with Willowbank Raceway close to capacity on each day of the event.

"We had more than 34,000 people over the four days, which is fantastic," Willowbank Raceway CEO Tony Manson said.
