Drive-by blasts into unit

POLICE are hunting an armed offender who blasted away at a Mooloolaba family's ground-floor unit with a shotgun.

Coast detectives are eager to identify those behind the shooting, which happened at about 4am on Thursday.

Residents recalled hearing shots fired, with Sunshine Coast CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards confirming two to three rounds from a .410-calibre shotgun were fired at the Ulmarra Court unit.

"We did recover a couple of shotgun shells in the street there which we believe was a result of that shooting so they're being examined now," Snr Sgt Edwards said.

The attack, which left a pellet lodged in a washing machine, came as detectives continued to investigate a drive-by shooting in Mountain Creek last month.

Det Snr Sgt Edwards said the two incident did not appear to be connected, with the victims unknown to each other and different types of weapons used.

"Whether this one was some kind of form of copycat type of incident, it's unsure," he said. "You'd have to think it was targeted at someone there... I think you would have to agree there's been some reason for someone to go to that specific street and fire on that unit block."

Yesterday, a nearby resident recalled hearing the gunshots, and wondered if he had been mistaken.

"I heard a 'pop, pop' and thought 'Am I dreaming or did that really happen?'," the resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

"I think it's just young f******* trying to scare people," he said.

Snr Sgt Edwards said the incident was extremely concerning, given the potential for tragedy.

"Anyone could've been walking around the house at that time of morning so the potential danger to anyone was significant," he said.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
