Driver, 73, blows .17 on New England Highway

A 73-YEAR-OLD man who told police he had been forced off the highway by another driver blew a breath/alcohol reading more than three times the legal limit.

Henry Bliesner had been driving to his home outside Nanango after a visit to Toowoomba on January 15 when he pulled into the Cooyar Hotel to catch up with a friend.

Having stayed longer than he should have and ignoring his friend's suggestion that he stay the night, the 73-year-old got into his car to continue the drive to Nanango, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

However, about 7.30pm other motorists came across his car stuck on the verge of a culvert on the New England Highway outside Cooyar, police prosecutor Sergeant Mike Robinson told the court.

When his attempts to drive off the culvert were unsuccessful, Bliesner was helped out of the vehicle by other motorists who called police.

He blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.17, Sgt Robinson said.

The self-represented Bliesner pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor.

The retiree told the court he lived about 5km outside of Nanango and the loss of licence would be difficult for him.

Magistrate Kay Ryan noted he had no previous drink-driving offences at all and accepted this incident was out of character for him.

Ordering the conviction not be recorded, Ms Ryan fined Bliesner $1000 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for six months.
