VIDEO: Driver cam catches skateboarder on range

A CENTRAL Queensland driver was shocked when he saw a young skateboarder riding down the Mt Morgan Range last month.

The driver recorded the incident on his dashboard camera which shows the skateboarder riding down the range in front of a car.

The driver posted his concerns of the dangers of skateboarding down the range on his Facebook page, along with the video, on November 17.

"Skateboarding kids of Mt Morgan Range: Remember the kid that was killed on the Mt Morgan Range a couple of years ago, well kids are still skateboarding on that same road. We've got a video of a kid standing on the cliff side of the range waiting and then a kid skateboarding with a car just behind him watching and guiding him on our dashboard camera."

Officer in charge of Mt Morgan police station Sergeant Mark Dean said he had received calls about the skateboarders from a number of drivers.

"This is an extremely dangerous thing to do and a number of people called us with concerns," Sgt Dean said.

"I personally attended the scene after I received the calls but the skateboarders had left by the time I got there. This sort of behaviour is very dangerous as a skateboard doesn't have brakes.

"It's extremely concerning as they could hurt themselves or get hit by a car and killed. You're not allowed to ride a scooter or skateboard on a road that's more then 60kmh and although the Mt Morgan Range is a 40km stretch of road, there are a lot of corners and bends that make it a dangerous road to skateboard on."

Before the death-defying skate

BEFORE skateboarding down the Mt Morgan Range, local teens had other ways of seeking some thrills.

In 2013, a group of local boys were known as the river jumpers of the Fitzroy after launching themselves into the river on their bikes.

The group of mates launched themselves off a metal ramp and flew into the Fitzroy with their BMX bikes while posing for photos.

There were even rules to the game. The riders had to hit the ramp at speed to launch themselves into the river and the winner was the one who could do the hardest bike trick in the air.
