Driver drove car off the road while trying to eat chicken

A WOMAN who drove her car off the side of the road while retrieving a piece of chicken she dropped on the floor appeared in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on two charges this week.

Kristine Naree White was eating chicken while driving on the Burnett Hwy at Bouldercombe at 3.30pm on July 31 last year when she took her eyes off the road to fetch the fallen food.

The court heard she drove off the side of the road, travelled 100m across a grass and gravel surface and hit a tree.

Police prosecutor Danita Clarke told the court police came across the car sometime later but White had already left the scene.

"Police observed the airbags had been deployed and a box of food was wedged between the driver's seat and the centre console," she said.

The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to one count each of driving without due care and attention and failing to report a road incident.

"She dropped the chicken and picked it up in a moment of inattention," defence lawyer Doug Winning told the court.

"She is not a menace on our roads."

White was fined $1250.
