Drivers involved in crash on Yaamba Rd still in hospital

IT was a crash that caused chaos at a busy Rockhampton intersection on Wednesday morning, but according to Transport and Main Roads, there's only been one severe crash there in two years.

The three-vehicle crash on the corner of Yaamba and Richardson Rds resulted in three people being taken to Rockhampton Hospital.

A Queensland Health spokesperson said one person was discharged from Rockhampton Hospital on Wednesday; however the other two patients were in stable conditions late yesterday afternoon.

The Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said data showed 25,000 vehicles per day were using Yaamba Rd in North Rockhampton.

"From November 2012, our records show only one crash resulted in hospitalisation at the Yaamba and Richardson Rd intersection in North Rockhampton," the spokesperson said.

In contrast, the Fitzroy St and Bolsover St intersection in South Rockhampton was listed number 10 in state-wide figures released in June for intersection crashes between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013.

There were seven crashes recorded in two years.

Rockhampton Forensic Crash investigators believe speed was a likely factor in Wednesday's incident.

Forensic Crash boss Sergeant Ray Pimm said a Nissan 4WD and a Toyota Rav4 were travelling south on Yaamba Rd.

The vehicles stopped at the Yaamba-Richardson Rds intersection to turn right into Richardson Rd, towards Lawrence's Holden dealership in Kawana.

The Nissan and the Toyota were making their way into Richardson Rd when a blue Toyota Aurion, driven by an 18-year-old man, rear-ended the Rav4.

The impact forced the Rav4 to roll, Sgt Pimm said.
