Drug shopping for mate leads to fine for 'helpful' buddy

TOOWOOMBA man Wade David Sallaway has a passion for helping others, but helping a mate out by picking up his drugs was taking things a bit far.

The 32-year-old worked for an organisation that helped homeless people and before that he had worked as a carer at a Toowoomba care facility, his barrister Frank Martin told the city's District Court.

However, on this occasion he had been picking up the drug for a friend when he was arrested by police.

Prosecutor Cameron Wilkins told the court police watching a known "drug house" on December 9, last year, had seen Sallaway standing outside.

Approached by police, the 32-year-old was found with a small clip seal bag of brown crystals which he admitted was "crack".

He told police he didn't use the drug himself, but he had picked it up for a mate.

Mr Wilkins said the drug weighed less than 1g.

Sallaway pleaded guilty to one count of possessing methamphetamine.

Mr Martin said ordinarily the matter would have been dealt with in the Magistrates Court where his client would have been fined.

However, his client was originally charged with supplying a dangerous drug, putting it before the higher court but that charge had since been discontinued.

Mr Martin asked that no conviction be recorded as his client needed to keep his Blue Card in his line of work.

Judge Craig Chowdhury acceded to the request and ordered the conviction not be recorded but fined Sallaway $1500.
