A BBC presenter has amused smirking viewers with his less than enthusiastic announcement of the news of the Duchess of Cambridge's due date.

Simon McCoy has earned something of a cult following with his deadpan approach to reporting news he finds underwhelming, including a report about the World Dog Surfing Championships in August.

After Buckingham Palace announced Kate and Will were "delighted" to confirm their child would be born in April, McCoy took umbrage at having to present it as news.

"We've just got this coming in from Kensington Palace," Mr McCoy said as the announcement was greeting with a giant red 'Breaking News' banner across the bottom of the screen of the national broadcaster.

"Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in April.

"Now, bearing in mind they announced she was pregnant back in September, and it was thought she was around two or three months pregnant, I'm not sure how much news this really is, but anyway…"

Former war correspondent McCoy then tried to drum up some delight at the news.

'It's April - so clear your diaries, get the time booked off, because that's what I'm doing. That's news just coming in from Kensington Palace."

McCoy then tweeted the news and also tweeted amused responses to his work.
