Easter heralds hot cross bun bonanza

BAKERS across the country are rolling up their sleeves in preparation for the Easter hot cross bun onslaught.

To satisfy the nation's craving for cinnamon, spiced fruit, melting chocolate and lightly toasted buns, last year, Baker's Delight whipped up more than 13 million hot cross buns and Coles reported selling more than 28 million of the symbolic Easter treat.

National Baking Industry Association's general manager Paul McDonald said Easter was a massive event for bakers.

“Generally a typical local bakery will produce around 60 dozen buns throughout the Easter period, with the larger mid-sized plant bakeries producing up to 12,000 dozen,” Mr McDonald said.

To help shoppers find a top bun this Easter, consumer group Choice put popular versions – traditional fruit, chocolate and fruit-free buns to the test.

The blind test, involved 22 people and hot cross buns varieties from Coles, Woolworths, Tip Top, Brumby's and Baker's Delight were taste-tested.

Traditional fruit buns were proved the favourite of the lot. Sixteen of the 22 taste-testers said they preferred traditional fruit buns, while six preferred chocolate.

None of the testers liked the fruit-free buns with both the Coles and Woolworths brands attracting comments like “why bother?” and “what's the point?''.

When it came to brand preference Coles' Fresh Baked Hot Cross Buns 30 per cent fruit topped the traditional category and Brumby's Double Choc Hot Cross Buns were voted the favourite of the chocolate variety.

Coles Seasonal Bakery category manager Leanne White said Coles' diverse range of hot cross buns hoped to cater for all tastebuds.

“There will always be a place for a classic, but this year's hot cross bun range packs a punch across the board – and with the help of over 570 qualified trade bakers and over 5000 bakery team members, they are baked fresh in stores daily,” Ms White said.
