Woman killed in fiery crash

A 36-YEAR-OLD Mackay woman died in a single vehicle crash on Sarina Range Rd at 7.20am.

The woman's compact four-wheel drive wagon plunged off the edge of the road, hit a tree and burst into flames.

Mackay district Senior Sergeant Dave Parnell said the car had travelled 30 to 40 metres down the side of the embankment.

"The single occupant was trapped (in the vehicle) at the time," Snr Sgt Parnell said.

"(The vehicle was) heading down the Sarina Range Rd from the Eton area, going down into the Sarina township.

"We had several witnesses come across the scene who tried to lend assistance but due to the heat from the fire they were unable to remove the person from the vehicle," he said.

Another police spokesman said the women's next of kin had been notified.

"It's still being investigated as to why the vehicle caught on fire," he said.
