Town under threat as bushfire burns out of control

EMERGENCY warnings were in place for a fire burning out of control in the NSW northwest on Monday night.

The town of Coonabarabran, which suffered through its worst bushfire crisis in more than a decade last year, was again under threat as a blaze moved northwest of the town at Oxley Crossing.

Residents who had not evacuated earlier in the day were advised it was too late to leave and to seek shelter as the fire front approached.

The Oxley Hwy was closed in both directions east of Coonabarabran.

Of the 99 fires burning across NSW on Monday, 26 remained out of control.

A fire near Wagga Wagga claimed at least 10 homes on the weekend.
