VIDEO: Exhibition bouts two of the best at PCYC
IT was an all action boxing tournament on Saturday night at the PCYC, with 12 bouts in total, two of them exhibitions. And they proved to be highlights.
"We put on a couple of exhibition bouts and those were two of the best fights," PCYC trainer Des Upton said.
In the first exhibition bout, Jessie Montecth took on Lachlan Belleville in the 75 kilo class. And there was no love lost between the two Rocky boxers.
"They both really put in," Upton said.
"They went flat out at each other for the three rounds and the crowd loved it."
In the second exhibition fight, Rocky's Sam Walker fought Yeppoon's Matt Richardson.
"That was another good fight, both went at it hard," Upton said.
In the points fights, another all Rocky bout saw the PCYC's Jo Mann fight Justin McLeod from Fitzroy gym.
It was a close contest, with Mann winning a split points.
"Jo hasn't been training much lately but he still put on a good fight and, although it was close, did enough to convince two of the three judges he was the better boxer," Upton said.
In only his fourth fight, the PCYC's Drayden Marou came up against a much more experienced fighter from Moranbah, Nathan Gray.
"Drayden put up a real good show," Upton said.
"That was only his fourth fight and he was up against an opponent who has had more than 20. Drayden showed real ticker to stay with him, but he lost on an unanimous points decision."
Making his boxing debut after joining the PCYC boxing club following the end of the rugby union season, Mace Hartley lost his first fight, against Cameron Watkin from Yeppoon.
"Mace fought well but just ran out of puff towards the end," Upton explained.
"If he can get some boxing fitness under his belt he will go well. He is as strong as a bull."
Finally, young Codie Ghillotti's bout was stopped in the first round against Nathan Gray.
"Codie just couldn't handle him," Upton said.
