Fight with bouncer proves expensive
MACKAY resident Matthew Ryan scratched a security officer’s face and poked a finger in his eye during an incident outside a Rockhampton nightclub.
Ryan, 24, was visiting Rockhampton to see some old friends and family and had been out drinking when he was ejected from the Zodiac Nightclub about 3.30am on September 4.
Ryan and several friends had been throwing coins at people on the dance floor so they were told to leave the club, prosecutor Senior Constable Wayne Smith told the Mackay Magistrate’s Court.
Once outside Ryan pushed one of the bouncers and several other people had to step in to stop him.
Ryan and a bouncer then fell to the ground in a scuffle and the security officer suffered scratches to his lips and face and had a finger poked in his eye causing it to weep.
Ryan pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.
Solicitor Vince Campbell, of Macrossan & Amiet, said Ryan had a poor recollection of the events because he had been drinking.
“As the security officer tried to restrain him some other people joined in and he fell to the ground and others went down with him,” Mr Campbell said.
Magistrate Damien Dwyer said: “This sort of violence will not be tolerated in any way.
“If you can’t handle your grog, do something about it.”
However, Mr Dwyer said he took into account an early plea of guilty, the remorse and co-operation shown by Ryan.
He was fined $1500 and was ordered to pay $750 compensation to the security officer.
