Extreme heat takes a toll on our animals

IT'S not just Gympie's human population who are suffering through the hot, dry conditions plaguing the region for months now.

The lack of moisture has had a tremendous impact on our Koalas, with Eucalypt leaves no longer holding enough water to sustain them.

"We've had three Koalas brought in during the heatwave last weekend," said Paula Rowlands from Koala Action Group Gympie.

"All of severely dehydrated and suffering from heat stress."

So severe was the stress the heatwave put on them that one has since died and the other has a fluid drip to nurse itself back to health.

The sorry state of the animals, according to Mrs Rowlands, has only worsened due to a lack of habitats and the risk of domestic pets.

"Often these poor koalas are so dehydrated they just sit at the bottom of the tree," Paula added.

"Then of course you have cats and dogs wandering the property, and they just don't stand a chance."

Dry conditions expected throughout the rest of the week won't help either, although the lure of a Sunday thunderstorm may provide some all-too-brief relief for the local population.

It's not just our koalas who are suffering either, even critters who enjoy the warmer weather are finding themselves overwhelmed.

Take for example the carpet python Peter and Bevly Hughes found in their bird bath.

"We often see snakes swimming in the dams but this one looked unwell" they said.

The snake ended up staying in the bath for nearly 36 hours.

"A couple of reasons come to mind," the couple added.

"Although snakes rely on ambient temperature it can still get too hot for them."
