Gracemere resident is Facebook's newest crime fighter

SUZI MacCallum wants to make sure her neighbourhood is a safe place for everyone.

To help, she has created a Gracemere Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page to help make locals more aware of what is happening in their community.

"In an age where nobody talks to their neighbours any more … (Facebook is) the best media, in my opinion, for opening up the lines of communication," she said.

"I'm happy to take messages from the community, and I'm also taking information from the police blog."

Both of Suzi's parents are members of the Neighbourhood Watch, but Suzi said often she found out what was going on in the area via Facebook. For this reason her mother asked her to start a page where all the information could be shared in one place.

Sergeant Ben Holdcroft, Officer in Charge at the Gracemere station, said it was encouraging to see the community's commitment, but stressed the importance of also reporting crime to police.

"The Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page is an excellent vehicle for the proactive targeting of crime and issues of concerns to the local community," he said.

"It is encouraging to see the ongoing commitment of the Gracemere Neighbourhood Watch community."

The site was launched on Monday and has more than 150 likes. Find it at facebook.com/Gracemere NeighbourhoodWatch.
