Famed protest Sausage dog wags his tail for last time

A MONGREL dog that became famous during Greece's anti-austerity protests - barking at riot police at the height of the country's debt crisis - has died of a heart attack.

The stray dog, nicknamed Sausage, became a media sensation and public darling in 2011, regularly showing up on the side of demonstrators and yelping at police amid the chaos of tear gas and flying petrol bombs.

He was runner-up for Time Magazine's Animal of the Year in 2011, beaten by a US Army dog that accompanied the US Navy SEAL team that killed Osama Bin Laden.

"He was Greek," said the veterinarian who heads the city's stray animal service, Anna Makri. "Like all stray animals, Sausage somehow reflected the restlessness of Greeks who refuse to bow down.

"The doctor's assessment was that he died suddenly, of a heart attack."

Sausage appeared on the front pages of most Greek newspapers and wagged his tail on TV screens as violent anti-bailout protests raged behind him. A Greek animal welfare group took Sausage in two years ago.
