Families flee from fires

FIVE families spent the night away from their homes as fire crews battled a raging bushfire between Rockhampton and Cawarral.

The families were evacuated as the fire threatened to jump containment lines and overwhelm houses in New Zealand Gully, about eight kilometres south-east of the city.

The fire's glow was visible from some parts of Rockhampton last night as crews on Mount Archer fought to keep the blaze in check.
