East St Mall fashion store reopens after flood damage
AFTER more than one month closed, popular East St mall fashion store RMK Fashions reopened last Thursday.
Ex-tropical cyclone Oswald wreaked havoc on the store, causing more than $5000 worth of structural damage and ruining a large amount of new stock.
The heavy rainfall flooded the Rockhampton store when it hit in late January.
RMK Fashions owner Kimberly Muller said the store had never been damaged so badly in her two-and-a-half years in the shop.
She said the loss of trade, staff wages, ruined stock and structural damage was enough to cause her to close the store indefinitely.
Fortunately however, they are insured.
"If we weren't covered, we wouldn't have been able to open again," she said.
"It wasn't just the water damage; there was humidity that damaged stock as well.
"We did a stock run just before the floods," Kimberly said.
The long closure meant the store lost about $15,000 and missed out on some shoppers buying race day wear.
But since opening, Kimberly has had many of her loyal clients in store, thankful their favourite shop is open again.
Kimberly said the stock that was not ruined was on sale as they have received a new shipment of stock from Sydney since reopening.
She encouraged shoppers to come in and get a bargain.
Kimberly said the new stock had a lot of monochrome prints.
"We've got new race day wear," she said.
"We have more stock, particularly going into the winter season," Kimberly said.
