FASHION stylist to the stars Jo Ferguson has a simple message to women who want to be noticed for all the right reasons on Melbourne Cup - don't flash too much flesh.
The former fashion director of Cleo Magazine and Women's Day has a celebrity list that includes Rihanna, Katy Perry, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Hawkins, Kristie Hinze, Sarah Murdoch and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas.
She told APN that Melbourne Cup Day was all about elegance, simplicity, bright floral colours or bold prints.
Jo, who won an around the world trip and a diamond watch as a 25-year-old at Randwick, said Melbourne Cup was about dressing elegantly - and comfortably.
"There is nothing worse than revealing too much skin,'' she said, advising that if women were showing off their legs, they shouldn't be showing off their cleavage as well.
"It's not a nightclub,'' she said.
Women should also keep on their shoes, adding carrying uncomfortable shoes at the end of a long Melbourne Cup Day was never a classy look.
When it comes to hats, Jo's had a few - and admits she has spent thousands on them. Given she only wears them once, she reckons she should hire them out - or open a hat museum.
She prefers the smaller, elegant ones than the huge over the top numbers.
With almost two decades in the fashion industry, Jo has worked with an amazing list of celebrities, as well as major advertising clients like David Jones, Myer and Westfields, as well as writing for magazines like Harpers Bazaar in Singapore, Cleo, Cosmo Bride, Australian Womans Weekly and Womans Day.
Her favourites to dress have included singer Nicki Minaj, who she worked with during her tour, as well as Fergie from Black Eyed Peas who she said was 'actually quite shy' until she hit the stage.
"Hugh Jackman was just incredible. He has such a presence and is a gorgeous man to dress.''
Jo revealed one of the secrets to stars' great fashion looks was shapewear which flattened the lumps and bumps to give a much more flattering and confident look.
