Family grieves 'larrikin'

HAYDEN Currie's mates keep turning up at his family's Tannum Sands home.

His dad Darren reckons it's a testament to his son's character.

"He was a lovely kid and he grew into a strong young man," Darren said.

"He was very outgoing, friendly and trusting."

But Hayden's life was cut tragically short on Australia Day

He was meant to turn 18 next Tuesday.

Police said investigations were continuing, however, initial investigations indicated Hayden was on the roadway when a passing vehicle hit him.

He died at the scene.

"It just hasn't sunk in yet," Darren said.

He points up at a framed photograph of his boy, aged just two.

"He was always a larrikin - I loved him to bits," the grieving dad said.

Little brother Craig, 6, is navigating his remote control car around the lounge room.

He stops to stare at that same picture for a moment. He takes it in, then carries on driving.

It's heartbreaking.

Hayden was at an Australia Day party.

His parents knew where he was. They were expecting him home that night.

"We had tea waiting for him," Darren said.

But Hayden didn't take his phone out with him.

Usually he'd call his dad for a lift if it was getting late.

"I just wish he'd had his phone. Normally he rings," Darren said.

"I just don't know what happened."
