MR Christensen has now apologised for his comparison of gay rights to gun laws via social media and has since removed his original post about it.
"My intention was simply to say that not everything the United States does should be followed," he said.
"However, on reflection, it was a poor analogy to link the issue to guns and I do apologise for making that link."
DAWSON MP George Christensen has received widespread criticism after he asked if the public will support America's lead on the right to bear arms.
"I'm wondering how many people who look to USA and say we should follow them on "gay marriage" because they're America the Great would want us to follow their lead on the right to bear arms?," Mr Christensen said on social media.
After posting the comment on social media Mr Christensen received almost 700 comments.
Patrick Kelly wrote: As one of your gay constituents, be a bit careful there George. The bigger concern is that 5 of 9 judges, who may or may not be representative, have foisted something on 300million Americans, who may or may not want it. Why not follow the Irish model and get Australians to decide, not politicians or judges? But don't draw a parallel between gay marriage and gun massacres.
Patricia Dawn Hunt added: Omg I really can't believe you are comparing gay marriage to gun control. This has got to be the lowest thing I have ever seen you post.
If two people love each other who really cares in the eye of the law they are legally have to declare each other as a spouse, and so on so why would a bit of paper matter to you?
How is that fair that they must live and follow the law but can not get married?
Remi Vigor: No one is suggesting that we follow America regarding marriage equality because America did it. We want it because its about equality and doing the right thing. This is by far the most ignorant question I've seen you put forward. Beyond a joke.
Todd Wallace was equally disgusted: Yet another example of why everyone doesn't take you or your (our) region seriously - ever since you become our MP we have had little to no federal projects & if we have I haven't seen them.
I thought that by now you would have learnt to filter what comes out of your head. Associating marriage equality & the right to bear arms are completely irrelevant in regards to context.
You're an embarrassment to the people you represent & I say that as a Liberal voter.
