FIFO hub: 'Visionary' move will see 'enormous' economic benefits

GRANT Cassidy can only see benefits coming from Rockhampton Regional Council's bid to operate Adani's Galilee Basin airport.

The managing director of Cassidy Hospitality Group said the "incredibly substantial announcement” would see broad economic benefits across the region.

"As far as economic benefit, there wouldn't be many projects and initiatives like this, of this scale, that will see enormous dollars flow back through Rockhampton,” he said.

"This is incredibly entrepreneurial.

"While it has been challenging for the business community over the last few years, there is a lot of built up anticipation that will see some of these initiatives come through and already I get a good sense people are starting to already see an upturn in economic activity.”

Mr Cassidy said an increase in population would have a flow-on for business, attracting more jobs to the city.

"What we need to see is these exact sort of announcements to give confidence for the existing businesses in the region to look at re-investing, to look at up-skilling their workforces,”

"The airport opportunity will certainly be one critical piece of infrastructure and it's a very entrepreneurial focus from council.

"This is visionary activity for a local government authority to be doing this.

"What I think we'll also see is the Rockhampton Airport capacity increase with all sorts of new opportunities with plans for export opportunities or the possibility of doing more with international tourism and all of that will be really good to see some broad economic activity spread across different sectors in the region.”
