Magistrate blasts drunken FIFO workers

MAGISTRATE Penelope Hay has blasted fly-in fly-out workers in Gladstone, saying their late-night gross intoxication, violence and abusive behaviour was unacceptable.

"It is different in our community when we have people fly in, fly out," she said.

"They think they can fly in and get away with it, but that's not the case."

The magistrate delivered her broadside during the hearing of FIFO rigger Augusto Sassi, who was evicted from the Central Lane Hotel at 1.45am on August 31.

Police prosecutor Merrilyn Hoskins told the court Sassi had head-butted a security guard before abusing police and security guards outside.

The defendant swore at police and resisted arrest before being taken to the Gladstone police station.

Ms Hay said abusing police and acting violently showed a blatant disregard for police in the community.

The defendant's lawyer, Brad Krebs, said his client had moved to Gladstone from New South Wales to work at one of the LNG plants on Curtis Island.

He didn't know many people so he went out alone to "sample Gladstone's nightlife".

Mr Krebs said his client had been deliberating on a recent separation from his wife and "clearly had too much to drink".

He said Sassi was shocked to see CCTV footage of his behaviour because he was so inebriated he didn't remember.

Ms Hay said this was not a one-off, but something Sassi engaged in "time to time" when he was too drunk.

Sassi was issued with a banning order and fined $1000.

A conviction was recorded.
