Fire brigade comes to the rescue of baby flying fox

IT MAY not have been their typical rescue, but that didn't stop local fire fighters helping to save a baby flying fox on Wednesday.

Lana Jones, of the Rockhampton Wildlife Rescue Education and Conservation Group, said the young flying fox had been heard crying in the tree for a couple of days.

The decision was made to bring in the fire brigade when other efforts to get it down failed.

"It was a very tall tree, maybe 100ft tall," Lana said.

She said the fire officers helped a qualified bat handler rescue the animal.

"The fire officers used the rescue as a training exercise," Lana said.

She thanked everyone involved with the bat's rescue.
