Fire forces evacuation near Rocky

RESIDENTS east of Rockhampton were forced to evacuate at midday as a large bushfire moved towards homes in the New Zealand Gully area.

They were forced to temporarily relocate to the Cawarral Community Hall.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service said the large bushfire was located south of New Zealand Gully at noon.

The large fire was travelling in a north westerly direction and is expected to impact the areas of New Zealand Gully, 8km east of Mt Archer, within two hours.

Households in the New Zealand Gully area had previously been door-knocked by the fire service and were advised to relocate as a precaution.

Thirty-one Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and Department of Environment and Resource Management crews are working to contain the blaze but firefighters may not be able to protect every affected property.

Residents are advised to call Triple Zero (000) if their property comes under threat.
