Supsicious fire in abandoned theatre

POLICE have launched an arson investigation into a large blaze that broke out in the abandoned Wintergarden Theatre in Rockhampton this morning.

Several fire crews were called to the fire at the heritage-listed Alma Street theatre after receiving a triple zero call around 7.15am.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service said when crews arrived the ground floor of the building was well alight.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze shortly after 8am but remain on scene ventilating the building.

At this stage the amount of damage is unknown but the spokesperson said the fire was contained to the theatre.

Police have taken evidence from the scene and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is doing a separate investigation into the blaze.
