OPINION: Valley will pull together for fire victims

ONCE again Maclean has been hit by a CBD fire. This is the fourth fire in 10 years to impact this heritage village and again the town has had a lucky escape with no lives lost.

Disasters like this are too many not to mention .

The owners of this building, shops and their employees for now will be left without an income.

The NSW Fire Brigade and RFS annually remind us to check our smoke alarms and maybe it's a timely reminder to also check and do an audit on the wiring on some of those heritage buildings.

When the Maclean Boulevarde burnt to the ground the community gathered and did a fundraiser for the occupants of the shops and flats.

If there is one thing I know and love about the people living in the Clarence Valley it is their strength of spirit and resilience in tough times.

Their capacity and willingness to pull together and help each other out during a flood or fire is awe-inspiring and this can be also said for the firies who attended the scene on Saturday night.

Those who are called out to attend fires, floods or accidents are more likely to be a neighbour who might well be paid to attend but certainly gives a lot more than what they are paid to do.

Even in those times a hug, a kind word or a cuppa can make all the difference to a speedier recovery.

While I was at the fire scene on Sunday morning one of the cafe owners came up and offered breakfast to someone who was keeping an eye on the premises.

There in my mind is an example of country generosity.
