Firebirds scoop Australian title

THE Queensland Firebirds have underlined their ANZ Championship credentials with a come-from-behind 55-44 win against the NSW Swifts in the Australian Conference final in Brisbane.

Backing up less than 48 hours after knocking out the West Coast Fever in an elimination final, the Swifts took advantage of a host of turnovers and penalties to lead 13-10 at the first break.

But with captain Laura Geitz leading the defence, and shooters Romelda Aiken and Gretel Tippett getting the upper hand, the Firebirds led 27-26 at half-time.

The Swifts rested gun shooter Caitlin Thwaites in the second half, but it made little difference as the home side powered away.

The Firebirds will host the loser of tonight's New Zealand conference final between the Northern Mystics and WBOP Magic in one semi-final next weekend, while the Swifts will cross the Tasman to take on the winner in the other semi-final.
