Firies fight to contain grass fire

A GRASS fire has erupted in the Toowell Road O'Connell area this morning.

Fire crews are currently on scene at a grass fire near Gladstone Benaraby Rd and Hughes Rd, Wurdong Heights (Gladstone).

Three brigades are currently at the scene and they are waiting for more back-up.

Police are coordinating traffic control along the Gladstone-Benaraby Road as smoke from the fire is causing visibility issues.

Motorists travelling in the area particularly along Gladstone Benaraby Rd could potentially be affected by smoke haze as a result of this fire. It is vital motorists take the necessary precautions and travel to conditions.

A spokesman for the rural Fire Brigade said that they may need to back burn around 40 hectares to stop the fire from getting out of control.

Houses in the area are currently being hosed down, however, there is no immediate threat to property at this time.

A spokesperson for Gladstone Fire Brigade said the fire had potential to become serious.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
