Helicopter searches for fisherman
UPDATE 2.40pm: The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service chopper has left Rockhampton en route to Corio Bay to search for a missing fisherman.
State Emergency Service personnel and police have been searching the area near Corbett’s Landing today without success.
After a press conference this morning, police said they were hopeful the well-known Yeppoon commercial fisherman’s strong swimming skills and local knowledge could help save his life.
The 48-year-old’s boat was found stranded in mangroves yesterday.
He is believed to have gone out on his boat on Tuesday and was last seen at Kelly’s Landing about 4pm that day.
Police are mindful crocodiles have been recently sighted in the area.
A member of the public noticed the boat in mangroves about 7am on Wednesday and raised the alarm when it was still in the same location at 4pm.
More than 30 people from the SES, police, and rescue helicopter service are involved in the search, which recommenced this morning at first light.
Police are coordinating the search efforts.
The boat, a 4.7m aluminium vessel, is being mechanically tested.
The missing man’s car, a white Toyota Hilux, has been located.
Police are appealing for anyone who can help to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
