UPDATE: Power back on soon after rods pull down powerlines

UPDATE:

Ergon Energy have confirmed power was reinstated to a property on Hammond Way 40 minutes after contact was made with a low-voltage line.

Ergon Energy is urging residents to adhere to the online factsheet Look Up and Live.

While early reports revealed rods were the cause, it is believed it may have been masts that caused the powerlines to fall just after 5pm Monday.

EARLIER:

A BOATIE who didn't lay down his rods pulled down powerlines in Urangan on Monday afternoon.

Police said a car towing a boat with upright fishing rods caused powerlines to come down on Hammond Way just after 5pm.

Police arrived on scene and an Ergon Energy crew was called to restore power and ensure the area was made safe.

Safe boating tips

It is the responsibility of boat owners and operators to ensure their boat maintains a safe distance from powerlines at all times.

Boat owners and operators can follow these simple steps to stay safe:
• Always lower masts to the transport position before moving to and from rigging areas.
• Be aware of your surroundings and look up for powerlines and make sure that you don't raise the mast or antenna too close to powerlines.
• Look up and check for powerlines between you and the boat ramp before launching your boat.
• Understand your boat and make sure you know the distance between the boats waterline and masthead.
• Plan your trip, be aware of powerline crossings on the waterways and ensure you can navigate at a safe distance.
• Use an observer at all times.
