Flood victims settling back into more permanent homes

IN A sign the Bundaberg community is getting back on its feet, the last flood displaced residents being housed at Finemore Caravan Park have now moved on.

Housing and Public Works Minister Tim Mander said 20 relocatable dwellings which had accommodated 64 households were being removed from Finemore Caravan Park as they were no longer needed.

"The majority of these households - 48 in total - have been moved into social housing," Mr Mander said.

"The remainder have either found their own accommodation, returned to their homes or moved into private rentals.

"It will be a great relief to these households to have appropriate long-term accommodation after the disruption to their lives caused by ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald."

Following the devastation left by the cyclone in January, the department engaged 390 contractor organisations across the state to assist with disaster recovery and repair work.

Mr Mander said the department would investigate engaging a community housing provider to manage remaining temporary housing in the North Burnett region.

"Although the temporary accommodation in Finemore is being removed, other sites in Mundubbera and Gayndah are still needed for another four to six months," he said.

Mr Mander said he would be heading out to Mundubbera and Gayndah on the weekend to get a first-hand update on how things are progressing.

"There are exit plans in place for these sites and the department will continue to discuss options with residents which may include returning to a private home, returning to a private rental or working with Rent Connect Office to find suitable private rental accommodation," he said.
