Floods to blame for Rocky business going into liquidation

THE demise of Joe and Diane Garvey's Rockhampton optometrist business was like an armed robbery scene in an action movie.

A daylight theft, some might call it.

That's how she described the Friday afternoon, on October 19, when she said liquidators rapped on the door at their south Rockhampton business and told her to vacate the building immediately.

She said staff members were told not to touch a thing.

Diane and her husband Joe (pictured) owned the Rockhampton Optical store in East St.

It had been their little spectacle for the past 22 years.

But almost two weeks ago, liquidators shut-down the store and specialists were called in to change the locks.

Diane said they were not given an opportunity to call their clients to say their business had gone into liquidation.

Diane, who managed the Rockhampton Optical office, said the business's demise was the result of a number of factors that included the total bill cost from the 2011 and last year's January floods.

Other factors included a loss of income after the 2011 flood and other optometrist stores diversifying and setting-up shop in Rockhampton.

"We could have survived without the floods," Diane said.

"We got a call from the principal but we didn't know whether we were going to court.

"We do apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused ... we were simply told to just get out.

"Joe and I would like to thank the 20,000 or so customers we've had in the past 22 years."
