Roar coach does not see pre-season as a failure

BRISBANE Roar coach Mike Mulvey is refusing to see this pre-season as a failure, despite his reigning A-League champion outfit winning none of the silverware on offer.

Tuesday night's loss to Adelaide United put the Roar out of the FFA Cup, after losing the final of the Townsville Cup to Sydney FC last month.

The Roar was comfortably outplayed by the attacking enterprise shown by Josep Gombau's outfit, but the men in orange went in to the game with last-minute injuries.

Goalkeeper Michael Theo suffered a fractured wrist at training on Monday before the game, and he will be out for the first five to six weeks of the regular season, after having a plate and pins inserted.

Star midfielder Matt McKay was missing as a result of ankle surgery, but hoping to be right for the start of the A-League season - a return clash against United at Suncorp Stadium on October 12.

And captain Matt Smith was a late scratching from Tuesday night's defeat after picking up a bout of gastro.

"I don't see it (this pre-season) as a failure at all. Every pre-season is different," Mulvey told APN.

"Last year we were very dominant in the pre-season, but we didn't have the disruptions we had this year.

"That's not an excuse it's a fact.

"It (the FFA Cup) was a trophy that everybody was playing for and we missed out on it, so there's disappointment about that, but our real bread and butter starts on October 12. We were successful last season, so now we're the hunted."

Mulvey lit the fuse for a fiery return clash against Adelaide in round one of the A-League season in Brisbane.

"We'll be ready for Adelaide when they come to Suncorp in October," he said.

"I don't think that they're any more potent than they were last year. In fact, the goals we conceded last (Tuesday) night were due to our own mistakes."
