Foreign aid budget cuts slammed by charities

THE budget move to cut foreign aid to Africa by 70% has been widely condemned by several international charities.

After aid to sub-Saharan Africa was cut from $189 million to $93 million over the next three years, CARE Australia chief executive Dr Julia Newton-Howes said it would take many years for the aid budget to recover from the damage inflicted.

Aid to Indonesia was also slashed in Tuesday's budget, by 40%.

Adding to the $11 billion already cut from Australia's global foreign aid budget since the Coalition came to power, $3.7 billion more will be cut over the next three years.

The cuts are a blow for Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who has been a strident supporter of maintaining Australia's overall aid contribution.
