Former presidents ready to roll
“YOU wouldn't believe there are so many past presidents, would you?” was how Diggers Memorial Club's Mike Vagg summed up the coming week of lawn bowls.
Over the weekend it is a battle for the district winners as they aim to become the Past President State Fours champion team.
The final of the state fours will be played at Diggers on Sunday.
While the state fours will feature the current best-of-the-best from all eight state districts the remainder of the week will provide lawn bowls of an equally high quality with 34 teams competing over four days.
“It is the Past Presidents State Friendship Carnival,” Vagg explained.
Having so many teams means the carnival cannot be staged at just one venue.
Vagg said alternating from the synthetic surface of the Diggers Memorial Club with the natural greens at North Rockhampton Bowls Club will provide its own challenge as the carpet surfaces are currently running a lot faster.
Apart from the chance of meeting old friends, the bowlers get an opportunity to earn some pocket money with a total of $5000 being paid out to the top four-placed finishers and the eight-round winners.
The Friendship Carnival begins on Monday and ends Friday – Wednesday is a lay day.
Each team plays two games a day of 18 ends with no time limit.
Vagg will skip a team, but has not got to the point of planning how to spend any prize money.
Teaming up with Vagg are former Diggers presidents Brian Owens and Charlie Wetherall, while they also have out of state “ring-in” Dave Plumkett from South Australia.
The Past Presidents Friendship Carnival ends with a presentation dinner at Frenchville Sports Club next Friday evening.
