Former Raider to provide spark

THE Mackay Cutters will be looking for David Milne to use his experience and skill to add significant spark to their backline this season.

Milne, 26, who played 50 NRL games with the Canberra Raiders, makes his first appearance in Cutters colours in today's Queensland Cup trial match against the Central Queensland Capras.

The match opens a big day of footy at Virgin Australia Stadium, which culminates with the NRL trial between the Cowboys and Titans at Virgin Australia Stadium.

Milne has been training with the North Queensland Cowboys since November and played in the NRL side's first two trial matches.

STM Cutters coach Anthony Seibold said Milne had gone well with the Cowboys - where he was joined by fellow Mackay-contracted player Chad Grintell - and would now boost the Cutters with his vast experience.

"He's really enjoyed the training up there," he said.

Seibold said Milne's game-awareness would be a great asset to the backline, which "struggled to execute" last season.

"He's got some explosive speed and power, especially off the mark," Seibold said.

Today's Cutters outfit also features four dual-registered players, which has Capras coach John Harbin wary.

"We will be throwing a few of our boys into the cauldron," he said.

The Cutters have named an extended squad for today's match and will split them into two teams to share the game time.

The top performers will make up next weekend's final trial against the Northern Pride at Moranbah.
