LAWN BOWLS: What a cruel game lawn bowls can be...
Last weekend during the 2011 District Pairs playoffs at the Yeppoon Bowls Club the hosts were in an engaging battle against Victoria Park.
It was a very close affair until the 17th end when Yeppoon were holding six shots on the end only for skip, Sam Crow, to move the kitty and gift three shots to Victoria Park's Keith West and Fred Carrington.
Given that advantage, Victoria Park went on to win 22-16 and set themselves up as eventual championship winners over North Rockhampton.
In the other first round game Rockhampton played Welfare with Gil Callow and Clem Magee from the Rockhampton club having a comfortable win over Peter Wills and Ian Raynor from Welfare.
North Rockhampton and Diggers had the bye in the first round and came into the action for the semi-final.
Rockhampton met a North Rockhampton pairing of Ken Ingram and Denis Bartlem but were unable to snatch victory with North Rockhampton coming out winners 19-13 after over four hours' hard battle on the greens.
Victoria Park continued on their winning way with a comprehensive 22-8 win over the Diggers pair of Bill Cameron and Bill Karran.
The final proved to be a very tight contest with both teams going shot for shot.
Victoria Park got away to a four shot lead only to see North Rockhampton fight back to 15-all on 18 ends.
The 19th end proved the turning point. Victoria Park were two down and Fred Carrington played to put the kitty in the ditch with his last bowl but was slightly narrow. However, he still achieved a remarkable result by taking out the two shot bowls to score four shots.
Victoria Park scored another shot on the 20th end which was enough to hold North Rockhampton at bay and seal a win 21-15.
This weekend is the playoff of the District Singles at the Rockhampton Club and players should note they must be in attendance at 8.45am for the draw.
