Four prisoners have come down off roof

MONDAY UPDATE: Four prisoners have come down off the roof of the Maryborough jail, according to Queensland Corrective Services.

A QCS spokesman said they came down from the roof just after 8am and were secured in cells.

He said Queensland Police Service negotiators were called in and the centre locked down on Sunday after the inmates climbed onto the roof of a building about 1.30pm.

The spokesman said there were no injuries to prisoners or staff and no elevated risk to the security or good order of the centre.

He said the chief inspector would investigate the incident.

SUNDAY UPDATE: The Maryborough prison is in lockdown after four prisoners gained access to the roof of a building about 2pm on Sunday, Queensland Corrective Services has confirmed.

A QCS spokeswoman said the Queensland Police Service and the Corrective Services Investigation Unit had been advised and police were at the scene.

She said the chief inspector would investigate the incident but as it was ongoing, it was not possible to provide further details at this time.

EARLIER: Four prisoners are believed to be staging a protest on the roof of the Maryborough Correctional Centre.

The Chronicle understands the tension is a result of ongoing issues between prison officers and inmates in section six of the jail.

A local source said prison officers were not surprised to hear of the protest action after several weeks of "out-of-control behaviour" by inmates.

The source said staff were regularly told to f*** off by prisoners and had complained of increasingly volatile behaviour as the "crims are running it".

A meeting between the general manager and staff is believed to have been set down for later this week.

The disturbance has been going on for more than an hour.

No further details are available at this time.
