One shot Covid-19 vaccine: how does it work?

Four new cases as new vaccination hub opens

Queensland has recorded four new cases of the COVID-19 virus, all detected in hotel quarantine and acquired overseas.

The new cases take the state's total number of confirmed infections since the coronavirus pandemic began to 1328.

Of those, 11 cases remain active - five in the Metro North region of Brisbane, four on the Gold Coast and two on the Sunshine Coast.

Queensland's last reported case of community transmission was 46 days ago.

On January 11, the partner of a Hotel Grand Chancellor cleaner tested positive to the pandemic virus.

The cleaner, in her 20s, is believed to have become infected through surface contamination at the quarantine hotel, triggering a three-day lockdown in Greater Brisbane.

More than 76 per cent of Queensland's cases of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, were overseas acquired - accounting for 1021 infections.

Queensland began COVID-19 vaccinations this week, with more than 1300 people receiving the Pfizer shot at the Gold Coast University Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Cairns Hospital came online today, with expectations for about 100 people to receive their first dose of the vaccine.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the Cairns Hospital vaccination hub was a particularly important step in the state's COVID-19 recovery.

"I am thrilled for those getting vaccinated today and I will be the first in line to receive my vaccination when it is my turn," Dr Young said. "It is truly our best chance at getting Queensland back on track."

The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Townsville University Hospital and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital will begin rolling out COVID-19 vaccinations next week.
