Freedom Flyer destroyed as fire raged through harbour
POLICE are investigating after fires destroyed two boats at Rosslyn Bay Harbour and damaged three others on Saturday night.
The Freedom Flyer, owned by the Allen family, was destroyed along with a Marine Parks vessel.
Emergency services were called around 9pm on Saturday after reports a police vessel was on fire.
Upon arrival they discovered a different vessel, moored on the opposite side on the pontoon from the police vessel, was alight and drifting.
The second vessel was also well alight.
A water police vessel, another commercial vessel and a private yacht also sustained heat damage.
A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said they found two boats and one walkway on fire when they arrived.
By 10pm they said the two boats were destroyed.
No one was injured in the fires.
While the owners of the Freedom Flyer did not wish to comment, they did issue a statement on their Freedom Fast Cats Facebook page.
"As you all may already be well aware, Freedom Flyer caught fire last night," it said. "No new information has been revealed as to what circumstances resulted in this tragic outcome. We wish to advise you that the ferry to Great Keppel Island will still be running today and during the school holidays."
The cause of the fires is yet to be determined, and police have declared a crime scene.
Police are reportedly searching for a dark purple XR8 Ford in connection with the fire.
