LOCAL woman and school principal Leisa Neaton has been selected as Labor's candidate for Capricornia in the 2016 Federal election.

Mrs Neaton will take on the incumbent Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry in next year's election.

The Frenchville State School principal won the preselection round with 85 votes. 

The Yeppoon woman ran against former Labor candidate Peter Freeleagus and Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow.

Mr Freeleagus received 60 votes and Cr Strelow received 41.

Leisa is based in Yeppoon and is the principal of Frenchville State School in Rockhampton.
