FRW idea comes off as a joke

WHEN he heard Fitzroy River Water wanted to purify mine water to drought-proof Mount Morgan, Mirani MP Ted Malone says he thought it was a hoax.

“You could have knocked me down with a feather,” he said yesterday, publicly calling for Rockhampton Regional Council's water authority to think again.

“I just couldn't believe it was a serious proposal and the more closely I look into it the more convinced I am that FRW should reconsider,” he said.

Mr Malone says he's taken lots of calls from concerned Mount Morgan residents on the issue already.

“People are very worried up there and I don't blame them. I question the viability of the idea because no matter how they go about it, it won't be a long-term solution for a sustainable supply of fresh water in the town.”

His main worry is that skimming off purified water will concentrate the pollutants in what's left behind.

Mr Malone said he didn't think enough research had been done into expanding the capacity of the town dam. He conceded a pipeline from Gracemere would be a very expensive option.
