Funds for mental health care unit

SOME of Rockhampton's most vulnerable residents are set to benefit from this year's State Budget, as funds are pledged for the city to receive a mental health care unit.

As part of the $11 billion health budget, Rockhampton will also share in $950.7 million for beds, service and staff for the mentally ill, including an extra 134 mental health beds across regional Queensland.

Mental health staffing will also receive a boost with $37 million to be used to recruit 126 new employees to counsel the state's flood and cyclone victims as part of a two-year program jointly funded by the Federal Government.

There's also $1.5 million dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence in Rockhampton.

Meanwhile, $8.5 million is to be allocated over the next year to the new $50 million road and rail overpass south of the Capricorn Hwy between Gracemere and Kabra.

Earlier this year Robert Schwarten earmarked the Capricorn Highway and Malchi–Nine Mile Road intersection as the best place for the overpass.

But it is not clear whether the $8.5 million relates to the $10 million in funding Premier Anna Bligh promised in December last year.

As earlier promised, the Rockhampton Hospital will receive a further $27.7 million towards its $149.1 million expansion being funded by both State and Federal Governments.

As previewed yesterday, Ms Bligh also pledged $3 billion to rebuild roads, railways and public buildings in regions affected by floods and cyclones.

Key regional highways to be upgraded are the Bruce Hwy, Dawson Hwy, Gore Hwy, Leichhardt Hwy, Mount Lindesay Hwy, New England Hwy, Warrego Hwy, Wide Bay Hwy and Cunningham Hwy.
