GALLERY: Volkswagen Golf R revs up driver's passion
THE motoring Gods must be shining down on me over the past couple of weeks.
I've been blessed with the opportunity to test drive some of the meanest machines on the roads.
This week it came in the shape of one of the most recognised rally cars: The Volkswagen Golf R.
With this in mind, I decided to take this four-wheeled fun-size power house on some familiar turf - a road with plenty of bends and inclines.
Suffice to say the Volkswagen Golf R played to its strengths zipping its way up Pilbeam Drive to the peak of Mount Archer.
Golf R unleashes its power like a gym junkie explodes into their training session after a double dose of pre-workout - hardcore!
None of its energy goes to waste either - the 2.0L TSI engine transfers an impressive 206kW of power and 380Nm of torque to the road.
The 4MOTION technology ensures that driver power is diverted to the wheels that need it most, ensuring the vehicle retains as much traction as possible, even when road surfaces is lose or slippery.
Looks wise, there can be no mistaking the spirited Golf R.
From the front to the rear, the Golf R is understated, ye eye-catching, it exudes confidence and style in equal measure.
The Golf R incorporates new bumper designs and newly designed 19I 'Cadiz' alloy wheels.
The front spoiler wears a chrome strip and the radiator grille and the louvers of the large air intakes are presented in gloss black.
A chrome strip also runs along the lower edge of the grille and through the Bi-Xenon headlights with their distinctive 'double U' LED daytime driving lights.
On the right side of the grille, sits the R logo in chrome.
Sitting on lowered sports suspension and gripping the road with low-profile tyres wrapped around alloy wheels, the Golf R sits confidently like a coiled spring just waiting to be released.
Special interior features underscore the car's premier positioning beginning with the R leather multi-function sports steering wheel and sports seats in 'Race' black fabric/grey Alcantara combination with R logos.
Other design features include stainless steel front sill strips upgraded with illumination and the R logo, and brushed aluminium on all pedal caps.
Carbon Touch and Piano Black colours are used for the dashboard, which has been conveniently angled to favour the driver side for easy use and less distraction from the road.
Volkswagen Golf R is just as much brains as it is brawn.
When it comes to exploring this vast land, navigation has never been easier - thanks to the Discover Media package with two SD card slats for navigation and media, 2D and 3D bird's eye map views and a 5.8" colour display with capacitive touch screen.
It's information at a glance, and in addition also features a CD player, auxiliary input, USB interface, MP3, WMA, and AAC music playback.
Minimising distractions is important when you're driving and Golf R allows you to connect your Bluetooth - enabled hone or media player to the sound system.
This then allows you to receive calls, have your text messages read out to you, and you can reply to text messages via voice command.
To top it all of Golf R has a massive package of active and passive safety systems from airbags, electronic stabilisation program, driver fatigue detection system, multi-collision brake, day time driving lights, reversing camera and parking distance sensors.
Size does not matter when it comes to the epic advanced technologies and power packed into the Golf R.
