FORMER Prime Minister Julia Gillard's book signing event today at Stockland Rockhampton has been cancelled.

Ms Gillard was due to appear at the north Rockhampton shopping centre today for the launch of her autobiography, My Story.

However, a spokesman for Ms Gillard yesterday said she had fallen ill and could not make it to the beef capital.

The lunch at Wilby's Rockhampton in Canning St today has also been cancelled.

Residents who have bought tickets will be notified by email about the cancellation.

Ms Gillard is expected to visit Rockhampton early next year.

The book is Julia Gillard's story of what it was like - in the face of government in-fighting and often hostile media - to manage a hung parliament.

She also speaks about trying to build a diverse and robust economy, creating an equitable and world-class education system and attending to Australia's international obligations and building strategic alliances for the country's future.
