Girls answer Red Cross call

“WE want your blood.”

No, it’s not a line from the new Twilight film; it’s a desperate plea from Rockhampton’s Red Cross Blood Donor Centre.

A total of 557 blood donations are needed in November and with only seven collection days left, the centre still needs to make over 300 collections.

So do as these Rockhampton Girls’ Grammar students have done, and roll up your sleeve and help save three lives.

Year 12 student and second-time donor Lauren Ball said she was a member of the Young Blood club, a group of students who go to the centre every 12 weeks to donate.

Lauren said she donated because she knew people who were in accidents and had needed blood.

“I like helping people and I think it’s a good cause to think you can save three people.

“It’s good to know you are helping someone,” she said.

To be eligible to donate blood you must be fit, healthy and aged between 16 and 70.

Apheresis (plasma) panel co-ordinator at the Quarry Street Blood Donor Centre Kerrin Shattock said there was a continual demand for blood, based on the Rockhampton population.

She said the centre would be open on Christmas Eve from 8am to noon to keep up the supply.

The centre is open on 2.30pm to 7pm Monday, Tuesday at 8am to 2pm, Thursday 2.30pm to 7.30pm and the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.
