Girls can hardly wait for formals

KIRRA Ireland has been waiting for this moment for five years.

Now that her exams are done, it’s finally time to put the textbooks in the cupboard and glam up for the biggest celebration of her life so far.

Formal fever will hit Rockhampton this week with hundreds of year 12 school leavers stepping it up in the style department.

Yesterday Kirra, Rachel Cage, and Lachlan Hite, of Glenmore State High School, and Alysha Semple of North Rockhampton High School, all hit Hills in Hollywood for some final preparations.

Kirra said the school formal was a “big deal” for graduates.

“I’ve been looking forward to this for five years,” she said.

“It’s also something to look forward to, to get through exam block.”

All three girls have already chosen their dresses and Lachlan has a hire suit picked.

Kirra chose a Grecian-style eucalyptus-green dress – one of the most popular styles this season. Alysha wanted something different – a beaded orange and purple dress, which she ordered months ago.

Hills in Hollywood owner Jenny Sorensen said it had been busy since Easter.

And choosing a formal dress was not a one-visit job, she said.

“Many girls have a particular dress in mind that they have been dreaming of for the last five years,” Ms Sorensen said.

“Pale colours have been popular and the Grecian style – but everyone still has their individual tastes and are sticking to the latest in fashion.”

However, the celebrations don’t end this week.

On Saturday Schoolies Week begins as hundreds of school leavers flock to the Capricorn Coast and other Queensland destinations.

Rachael isn’t just sticking to one week though, she’s planning a three-week-long extended Schoolies with her friends – to the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.

Kirra, Alysha and Lachlan are heading to Yeppoon.
