Record number of girls shave hair for cancer research

A RECORD number of girls have braved the shave at Fairholme College.

Raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation though its World's Greatest Shave fundraiser is a tradition among the Year 12 students.

This year 36 girls cut their hair and eight shaved their hair completely to raise about $40,000 for people suffering from blood cancers, which include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Student Lindy Roos was one of the girls to cut her hair, trimming about 30cm off her locks.

"We had been raising money for about a month and a half through bake sales, pigtail Fridays and a girls' night in," she said.

"I am very proud of the girls, we have worked really hard.

"Only seniors can participate and it is something we grow our hair long for."

She said one of the girls who shaved her head, Emily Muroe, had been growing her hair since Year five.

Emily grew it specifically to shave it off as part of the fundraiser when she reached Year 12.

The hair cut and shaved during the Fairholme College fundraiser last week will go toward making wigs for cancer patients.
